Groovy Spoon Frozen Yogurt is a small chain with two locations in south Los Angeles, California, and two in central Ohio. It’s a self-serve frozen yogurt concept with a number of creative flavors which is different depending on the location. According to the website, the yogurt place opened in California in 2009 before expanding its market to the “cold-weather” state of Ohio. Well, what works for Los Angeles seems to be able to work pretty well here in Columbus, too. This city is already saturated with good cold treats, but Groovy Spoon seems to have carved out its own niche.

Like many other yogurt places which have been springing up lately, Groovy Spoon offers a dozen or so flavors in self-serve machines and let you combine your own confection, charging by the ounce. Unlike many other places, this one doesn’t rely on simple flavors to combine into your own confections; instead it’s got a formidable list of options. In fact, next to none of them are simple. My favorite is the very distinctive salted caramel yogurt. It’s not a one-dimensional flavor; it tastes very much like the candy, complete with a little kick from the salt and a very strong molasses flavor. Also good is “Fluffer nutter,” a take on the desert sandwich made of marshmallow and peanut butter, it’s not a simple taste to emulate, but it’s pretty cool.

Among the other options you might like are the chocolate chip cookie, the root beer flavor and the cinnamon bun. The flavors aren’t all sugary candy either, there is also a pineapple, a strawberry, and a pomegranate-raspberry option. Altogether the list of flavors is impressive and usually complex, but that’s also sort of a double-edged sword; root beer and strawberries aren’t great together, not is caramel and pomegranate. You’ll have to think out the dessert a little more, because the flavor combinations for such complex tastes are…strange. I should also note that these options come in crepes, too. I tried the crepes and enjoyed them, they’re slightly fluffy and pretty good with fruit or one of the dozens of toppings you can pick from.

With a pleasant, sleek atmosphere that is especially welcoming in the hot summers, Groovy Spoon is a really cool place, easy to walk to and very pleasant to sit in and enjoy. The Frozen Yogurt is definitely different from what I’ve had before, and that’s a great thing. There are a ton of frozen yogurt places springing up these days, and it hard to know which ones to try first. If you’re in the mood for something a little more complex than your “average” one-flavor places, put Groovy Spoon high on your list.

Recommendations

  • The flavors here are great, but I suggest carefully selecting combinations. Some of the options don’t go well together.
  • Crepes are also an option to fill with yogurt, so give that a try.
  • The candy flavors are the best, but there’s also a limited fruit flavor selection if you’re inclined.
