Capo Italian Deli

715 Florida Ave NW.
Washington, DC 20001

Every restaurant has its charm, and in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington DC, there is intense competition from scores of bars and corner eateries. Capo Italian Deli has a charm that overshadowed the food; a bar in the back of the storefront lines people up for a chance to visit a secret place. But when they do, they too often overlook the enormous deli-style sandwiches served up at the front desk, often until someone sits at one of the glass-front seats in front of the restaurant and reminds people. But once you bite into one of these sandwiches, you’ll have a tough time forgetting it.

The sandwiches are the best thing to try here and inevitable they are packaged to go and served late into the night.

The best thing to try would be the Capo Special, the grinder-style sub is served up stuffed high with soppressata, which is an Italian dry salami, mortadella, which is a sausage-like meat made with pork and some pistachio accent, and a provolone cheese. The sandwich is further boosted with an Italian dressing, lettuce and the like. The bread is a secret here, it’s crispy on the edges but soft on the inside and as your sandwich sits, it absorbs everything inside it for this dense, beautiful hunk of deliciousness that satisfies and keeps satisfied.

The shop is gonna be a bit hectic, it’s just going to work out that way in the crowded streets of a fun nightlife area. But if you brave the crowd at the door and find your way to the sandwich, you’re certain to be pleased with what you try. Capo is old-school as sandwich shops go but utterly unforgettable in the execution. This is another DC experience that just enriches the place.
