There are a hundred places to grab a bite of pizza along Miami Beach, but a taste of that’s at Blocks Pizza Deli along Washington Street. Pizza is served up in these enormous thick-crust blocks. One’s a meal, and two or three? Well, they’re a party.

People who like the place tend to write their love for it up on napkins, and you’ll find those posted around the restaurant. People from all over the world come to visit Miami Beach, and when they do they have their favorites. This one has a global fan club.

The menu is short and sweet. There are a dozen or so pies to order any one day, or you can customize your own. Order them, and they’ll get tossed in the oven for you and quartered for good measure. Some of the things to try:

  • The Paisan: A traditional-feeling pie, this one has sausage, red peppers, marinara, provolone, oregano. Good if you’re really in the mood for that little bit of warm heat, but also a bit of a heavier option, very filling if that’s what you’re looking for.
  • Farmer’s Choice: Tomato sauce, mozzarella, red peppers, red onions, baby portobello mushrooms, and olives top this pie. A vegetarian choice, but also one that lets you eat something filling but won’t bloat you. Which is nice, because if you’re here, you’re probably thinking about your beach bod.
  • Build-Your-Own: A gift of an idea, put whatever you want on this pie. Customization, these days, is king. Some things that are good toppings might include the barbecue chicken (a sweet barbecue sauce means you don’t need a ton of other toppings for this one) and the sausage, a little of which goes a long way.

The beauty of the place is in the ingredients; not too heavy but still filling if you’re looking for it. We’re talking about Miami Beach, and yes, many of the clientele will be beachgoers who are image conscious, or looking for cheap eats that they’ll still enjoy. In both ways, this little dive succeeds in bringing something tasty to the table.

The shop is largely a take-and-munch place — there are a few tables, but overall it’s really just a pizza counter. That said, the service is pretty good. The food is pretty cheap, too, and for that inexpensive price, you’ll find it’s pretty satisfying food too. All in all, one of the better pizza shops you’ll find along Miami’s boulevards.
Recommendations
  • Each “slice” is a massive block of pizza that is then cut into smaller pieces. Natural for sharing, but I would say the average person is only going to be hungry for one.
  • Perfect to take and eat. A group can grab a box and carry their pizza to the beach if that’s what you’re looking for.
  • Take a look at the calzones if you want something yet heavier.
