3 starsThe Cock & Bull Public House — it’ll remind you somewhat of an English pub with its intricate exterior, but inside it’s much more a sports bar than anything else. Located along Hyde Park’s main stretch in eastern Cincinnati, this bar has plenty of pub grub favorites, and a few British-inspired dishes, to go along with a longer list of beer. It’s a place that seems to attract plenty of Cincinnatians on the weekends, but the wait and the prices can’t be ignored.

The menu is lightly inspired by British fare and there are a few familiar items — fish and chips and bread pudding, for example — but most of the food you’ll find here digresses to general American bar food. Rest assured, the “queen’s nachos” are decidedly not English. But the pub food has some charm to it. Among good dishes:

  • Bull burger: Lean-ground Angus topped with all the veggies and a cajun mayo. It’s the classic, basic burger and in a lot of ways it’s good. In theory it’s cooked to order but in practice the patty is too thin to come out in any way but well done. It’s a safe take but doesn’t blow you away.
  • Pulled pork sliders: The pulled pork is soft and served with a barbecue sauce that is aggressive on the spiciness. The pork tastes like its been steamed a bit too long, in practice it’s a little dry. Maybe some dark meat is needed there.
  • Bavarian pretzels: These are great. The pretzels are a little flaky and that beer cheese is thick and also has a little bit of a kick to it. A good way to get started.

I’m not sure I see the merit in the complaints that have plagued the spot about poor service. On each of my visits, the people here ended up being very pleasant, and I never felt any untoward negativity or rudeness. That said — on multiple visits, on and off hours, service did tend to the slow side. Maybe the place is understaffed or the waitstaff isn’t doing a good job of handling backups, but slow service is noticeable. The staff seemed to be rushing, which might explain the comments online that they seemed curt. But that’s not hostility, that’s just a restaurant dealing with a lot of people. I don’t think they were rude.

Altogether, though, the restaurant leaves you wondering a little bit, what it’s going for. It looks like a British pub from the outside, but inside it’s a sports bar. But in the back, it’s less of a bar feeling and more of an open, family-dinner type restaurant. I’m not sure what to make of the concept. At the end of the day, there are a lot of great bars and pub grub spots in Cincinnati, and I’m not sure this one stood out.

Recommendations

  • The spot looks like a pub from the outside, but doesn’t have a lot of British fare.
  • Parking is street.
  • Good spot to watch sports.
