There aren’t a lot of one-off sub shops in Dayton as well-branded as Steak Thyme, but this spot along Wilmington Pike in Kettering is actually a one-off establishment. And while the market locally is over-full on places that make subs, Steak Thyme is, as far as I can tell, the only local spot that is devoted to the legendary Philly Cheese Steak. The spot is popular for turning food around quickly, which you can grab via a very convenient drive-thru. The subs are great, and the experience overall makes for a good spot to go for a lunch.
The menu at Steak Thyme is dominated by a diverse menu of Philly subs — the original is there, of course, but there are a lot of different variations on it you can get in small or large sizes. My favorite of them is the “Spicy Chipotle Steak” which is served with a combo of jalapenos, onions, mushrooms and green pepper, alongside a chipotle mayo, it’s got a lot of forward heat. It’s filling even in the “regular” (7-inch) size and a definite tw0-meal charm at the “large” (12-inch) size. Easily the best cheese steak I’ve had in Dayton.
Don’t like spicy cheese steaks, you can also choose from such specialties as the “chicken Parmesan” — chicken and vegetables topped with marinara sauce and provolone cheese, or the “chicken teriyaki” — mushrooms, onions, green peppers, simmered in teriyaki sauce. I definitely recommend you give a try to the cheese steaks before anything else, but if you don’t like it, you can also get gyros, wraps, and a pretty big menu of burgers and some snacks, like fries and wings. The spicy burger would be my second favorite item on the menu; it’s hot but not too hot. The burger is frozen but other than that it’s a pretty good iteration. It’s all in all a pretty versatile fast food menu.
The restaurant is great, it’s a fast food concept with lots of high tables and booths, but it also features wait service, in addition to a walk-up counter to order food to go. There’s no lack of creativity in the food, and the concept is definitely creative. The people are nice, and the food comes fast, too. In all, Steak Thyme is a great experience, one worth a return trip.
