Located far off the beaten path of Miamisburg and West Carrollton’s other downtown businesses, and with naught for an online presence, it’s easy to pass by this restaurant without really knowing it exists. Still, if you’re brought in by the modest yellow sign you’ll find a very discount corner Chinese place where the food comes fast. Despite the humble exterior and the fact that Orchid Garden delivers to the surrounding neighborhoods, this might be the kind of place you’ll want to pass up. Try as I might, I really can’t find a single redeeming quality that would bring me back to the place.
The basics are there, but that’s about it. The food comes fast, and the food is hot, but it’s severely uninspired. Of the meats, the beef is the best, followed closely by chicken and shrimp. In dead last is the crab, because it’s not real crab. They make the food with those imitation crab sticks, and it’s apparent. It tastes every bit as boxed. And therein lays the problem, with everything.
The sauce tastes painfully simple; it’s part water, part butter, part salt and with some soy sauce or teriyaki or something thrown in for good measure. You can taste the components in all their unimpressive glory. Those meats might be good, but the vegetables are prepackaged. It’s painfully obvious. Maybe they chopped in a green pepper for good measure, because the green peppers are too big and still raw. It’s just awful, really. The rice is dry, which leads me to believe they don’t steam it well enough, or often enough. Anyway the end result is detestable, none of the food is worth finishing. They never asked if I wanted
The environment of the place is pretty plain, which is in and of itself fine, but it does not present a professional experience. The tables were not cleaned. The business inexplicably has an office right in the middle of its dining area, where all of the restaurant affairs seem to be managed, and where, for the duration of my visit, the owner or manager was apparently playing a computer game while watching the news. I’m not saying it’s a problem, particularly on a slow day, but in an office that is misplaced right where the customers are, that’s not a very good idea. Swap a bathroom out, move the business to the kitchen. Anywhere the customers won’t see it.
I hate to say this, but I’ve had frozen meals from the supermarket that tasted better than this food, which is understandable since so much of it seems barely modified from the freezer aisle. True they deliver, but if you live to the north, there are at least two other places that deliver nearby. Even if they didn’t though, you’ll find taking a short drive elsewhere will be worth your effort.
