America’s Dog

21 East Adams St.
Chicago, IL 60603

With five locations in downtown Chicago, America’s Dog proudly publicizes a pretty audacious claim: number one hot dog in Chicago. The restaurant takes the claim from a 2009 pick in Food Industry News’ Restaurant Tours Pick. One way or another, the dog store is packed with hungry Chicagoans every day and the walls are lined with many photos of the chain’s most famous fans. With a different dog representing different cities around the country, America’s Dog seeks to bring the famous wieners of America to Chicago.

America’s Dog offers the local masterpiece, the Chicago hot dog, at the forefront of its menu. This masterpiece features all-beef dog served with mustard, onions, relish, a pickle, tomatoes, sport peppers and celery salt atop a poppy seed bun. It’s a meal by itself, and I will say that the ingredients here are superior to anywhere else I’ve had this dog; the vegetables are fresh and crisp, and the all-beef hot dog is crazy good. Even the vegetarian version of it sacrifices nothing in taste.

Among the other dogs on the menu, America’s Dog features different dogs from other cites around the county. This isn’t city cuisines adapted to hot dog form — this is the big hot dog recipes of other cities brought to Chicago. An Ohioan like me appreciates the Cincinnati-style dog topped with chili, mustard and onions. It’s not the exact thing you’ll find in the Queen City, but it’s pretty close. The Memphis dog, topped with barbecue sauce, pulled pork and cole slaw, is another tasty alternative of one of my favorite cities. It’s creative without being overbearing. All told, the dogs are a classy take on local cuisine from chefs who know what they’re doing.

In the event you’re here but you’re not in the mood for hot dogs, there are plenty of other items on the menu for you to try. Sausage, beef, and pork sandwiches and burgers are plenty, and the restaurant also has fish and buffalo chicken sandwiches, salads and wraps. In other words, it can also be a typical sandwich shop.

With a menu of specials that changes regularly, a sleek interior concept and some very tasty food, it’s no wonder people like this place so much. There are plenty of reasons to give it a try to plenty of reasons to come back, even if you’re not a fan of the Chicago dog. America’s Dog has a well-rounded menu, a well-run and managed business, and, yes, one of the best representations of Chicago cuisine you’ll find this side of Lake Michigan.

  • The Chicago style hot dog should be the first thing you sample when coming to America’s Dog. There are dogs from other cities, of course, which are also worth a try.
  • There’s a pretty inoffensive menu of sandwiches, burgers and wraps if you’re not into hot dogs.
  • There are also online order forms and a weekly specials menu to keep things convenient and interesting.
