Three locations in central Columbus make Sugardaddy’s is a trader in upscale chocolate. With a modern, clean and pink-filled atmosphere, the place seems driven to attract cultured ladies needing a sweet rush. The place seems designed so that everything looks fancy and delicious, from the simple walls to the fashionable furniture. Naturally, it’s the perfect kind of place to be located downtown, because there’s a constant stream of people coming and going from the place every time I pass it. It’s no wonder, too: If you’re suddenly hit with a chocolate craving in the middle of the day, this is the place to handle it.
So the primary attraction in Sugardaddy’s are the brownies and blondies (which are basically brownies without chocolate in them.) Which are, in so many words, everything you could want in a brownie. The different choices feature the miniature cakes stuffed with cinnamon, butterscotch, caramel and nuts in plenty of new and creative ways. The basic cakes have an expertly conducted consistency; they’re slightly crunchy, almost flaky, on the outside but have a gooey, moist inside. Just right, especially when you’ll be taken aback by the unbelievable flavors.
The complexity of each brownie is so finessed it almost requires an individual explanation of each. The cinnamon blondie, for example, has a brown sugar base with pecans and a cinnamon-and-vanilla cake topped with a streusel. Each flavor is very striking and very dominant. With so much going on, it would be easy for a less refined brownie to be simply overwhelming, but Sugardaddy’s crafts its confections with a masterful refinement. I’ve never really been the type of guy who likes very elaborate combinations of strong flavors like this, but even I was taken aback at how balanced everything is. Artfully done.
There are other items on the menu, including cheesecakes, biscotti and chocolate truffles. The selection on each of these is smaller and they aren’t what I would consider to the stars of the show. A lot about this place really shines, so it’s not necessary to consider them a weakness.
The service in Sugardaddy’s is excellent. It’s staffed by friendly people who are both patient and helpful. While the prices are higher than many of the other bakeries in the downtown area, the extra money goes into glamorizing the place, and it’s clear to me the flavor is worth the cost. There are packages and handbags (yes, Tote bags filled with brownies) designed for gifting, and once you try some of these brownies, you will see just how great a gift these refined sweets would be.
Recommendations
- Try the brownies and blondies first, they are the best specialties of the place, though the cheesecake and truffles are good, too.
- The brownies are sold in a few special packages, not just the usual box-set types. There are packaged which come packaged and some in handbags specifically designed for gifting.
- Don’t forget that this place opens late in the morning, about 11 p.m.
