La Piñata is a small chain of so-called “Tex-Mex” restaurants currently encompassing three locations in the south Dayton-north Cincinnati area. It serves a variety of traditionally Tex Mex dishes featuring a lot of beef, chicken, and shrimp. I’ve been eating at this place for years and I have literally never found something on the menu I didn’t love.
Take a pick from the menu; quesadillas, taquitos, and burritos. All of the options are good. It pays to be adventurous in the restaurant and you’ll rarely find something you didn’t enjoy. What I tried:
- Chips and salsa: Complimentary chips and salsa are served as appetizers, and they are simply excellent. The salsa is somewhat watered down but the chips more than make up for it with their freshness.
- Rice soup: The broth is what’s really excellent in this dish. But it’s filled with nice white rice, avocado, some veggies and chicken to make it a full dish. A meal in and of itself.
- Combination 2: A tamale, enchilada and crispy taco. The combination of the three is just a little bit of heat in it! Very filling though. You’ll walk away stuffed.
There are even American dishes (hot dogs and chicken strips) for children and people not in the mood for something Mexican, as well as a sizable, customizable vegetarian menu for members of your party who don’t want anything with meat. And these dishes are actually as good as the others.
The environment of the restaurant is perfectly suited for all ages. Families and couples, young and old, large parties and small parties were present when I was there. There was a small bar offering some basic drinks like margaritas and beer, but I would suggest just a drink with the meal. With very modest pricing, La Piñata tops my list of places to go when I’m in town and hungry for some good food.
